WRV and Wavegarden at Atlantic Park, Virginia Beach

The first ever Wavegarden Cove in the United States is opening this summer 2025 in Virginia Beach. The landmark construction is located along 19th street between the current WRV flagship store and the Atlantic ocean. Visitors will enjoy year-round surf for all skill levels, with waves ranging from one to six feet. A new WRV retail space will serve as the facility's pro shop, providing boards and equipment on-site, plus surf lessons and an array of quality merchandise. Surrounding the water will be Atlantic Park, a mixed use development featuring restaurants, shopping, entertainment areas, and residential and office spaces all connected in a walkable park-like atmosphere.

European based company Wavegarden has spent over a decade testing different methods of producing waves to develop its leading-edge wave technologies. They boast the largest user capacity, maximum variety and quantity of waves, and the lowest energy and water consumption on the market.

The Virginia Beach Wavegarden Cove will produce up to one thousand waves per hour with long rides more than sixteen seconds. The size, shape, power and frequency of waves can all be adjusted to offer a powerful left and right break available in a variety of types (turns, tubes and aerials). The waves are very consistent – coming through every 8 seconds. Capacity ranges around 25-40 people per hour depending on the wave settings and zone.

The surf Lagoon alone spans 2.67 acres while the entire Atlantic Park development covers multiple city blocks for a total of 10 acres; no small endeavor by the development partnership, which includes the City of Virginia Beach, Venture Realty group, several private investor groups, and of course - Pharrell Williams. Pharrell continues to be an ongoing force in growing the creative culture of his hometown, bringing international attention to Virginia Beach with his event “Something In the Water”.

Atlantic Park construction now sits on the same location of the city’s previous Dome building, a facility that once hosted concerts by Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and Black Sabbath, before it was demolished in 1994.

Continuing in that spirit, the new indoor-outdoor facility is set to become a year-round entertainment destination. Outside the music venue there will also be a public plaza that serves as a community park to host fairs, markets, and free performances- all adding even more interest to the growing Vibe Creative district of Virginia Beach for surfers and non surfers alike.

While some traditionalists may have varying opinions on the idea of a man-made wave,  and of course nothing can truly replace experiencing the ocean, one can't help but admire the ingenuity that will supply a perpetually perfect barrel to the heart of the Mid-Atlantic.
